Bursting Strength Test (aka Mullen Test) indicates the box’s ability to withstand external or internal forces, and how the box will contain and protect its contents during rough handling and shipment. For example, a box with a burst-strength of 175 lb/in2 (lbs.-per-square-inch), indicates that the combined papers used to make the box can withstand 175 lbs. of pressure per square inch.
During testing, the specimen, held between annular clamps, is subjected to an increasing pressure by a rubber diaphragm, which is expanded by hydraulic pressure at a controlled rate, until the test specimen ruptures. The pressure reading at the instant of rupture is recorded as the bursting strength.
